Director Jon Favreau and screenwriter Justin Theroux raise the stakes in all the right ways in Iron Man 2, an exhilarating and funny superhero sequel that keeps multiple plates spinning with commendable dexterity, and places a little gourmet treat on each and every one. Familiar characters grow in ways that are logical, natural, and satisfying; a pair of new villains shine thanks to the charisma of two powerhouse performers; and the action is more kinetic thanks in part to the contributions of Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky, whose frenetic sensibilities help to make the film feel bigger and more thrilling while simultaneously putting emphasis on Tony Stark's increasing mastery of the heavy metal suit.

Of course, there's always the risk that fans of the original will decry the decision to take Iron Man 2 in a more traditional superhero direction after the first film took on such contemporary issues as terrorism and corporate corruption within the context of a comic-book universe; however, anyone who savors the concept of the arch nemesis -- which has been the bread-and-butter of comics since the early days of Superman and Batman -- will no doubt find plenty to cheer about as Tony takes on friend and foes while racing against time to reverse the negative effects that the suit has on his body.

Whereas Iron Man kept things relatively simple by focusing on Tony's origins and his struggle against corporate weasel Obadiah Stane, this sequel carefully opens up a whole new world of possibilities that are alternately tantalizing and foreboding. Screenwriter Theroux seems acutely attuned to what movie fans want from an Iron Man film, and as a result he's penned a script that's both smart and tight while never sacrificing character for action. Unlike many comic-book blockbusters that impatiently rush into the first action sequence for fear that audiences will nod off due to lack of stimulation, Theroux takes the time to capitalize on the revelation that came at the end of part one by showing us exactly where Tony is in the public eye, and precisely how he's responding to the unexpected pressures that have cropped up as a result of his disclosure. And Theroux does it in a way that couldn't be more satisfying; after giving us a taste of the public's reaction to Iron Man in a dynamic opening, he shifts the action to the Senate hearing regarding Tony's technology in a scene that's not only hilarious, but a brilliant introduction to one of the key villains, and a chance to get reacquainted with a new actor in a familiar role. Later, as the multiple storylines begin to unfold, Theroux manages to keep the momentum moving forward while maintaining a masterful balance of playful banter, blistering action, and plot-advancing revelations. By witnessing Tony's struggle with the physical side effects of his innovative energy source and the startling new discovery he makes by reconnecting with the past, we sympathize with a character whose ego always comes first. Also, by exploring the shifting dynamics within Stark Industries, we get to see firsthand how Tony and Pepper's relationship is evolving. And while the introduction of multiple villains has been the kiss of death for more than one superhero film franchise, Theroux forms a connection between the two antagonists that's entirely feasible.


But Theroux isn't the only one firing on all cylinders; director Favreau once again proves his prowess behind the camera by delivering big action sequences that display a genuine

understanding of both comic-book and Hollywood aesthetics. His style is by turns boldly traditional and hyper-modern, and by recruiting Tartakovsky as a storyboard artist, Favreau reveals himself to be a director who understands that film is an inherently collaborative medium that benefits from all kinds of input. Likewise, he possesses a keen eye for rhythm and character detail that takes full advantage of the incredibly talented cast. Downey Jr., Rockwell, Rourke, Jackson, and Cheadle all light up the screen each time they appear, ensuring that even the non-action scenes in Iron Man 2 are immensely entertaining -- it's nearly as fun to watch Tony match wits with Justin Hammer and talk shop with Ivan as it is to watch Iron Man and War Machine duke it out in a party-pooping battle-suit brawl. Even Johansson -- an actress known more for her dramatic skills than her physical abilities -- gets a chance to get in on the action. A climactic fight in which her character takes on an entire hallway full of bad guys -- at one point pole-dancing an adversary into submission -- offers proof that the dramatic heavyweight is perfectly capable of getting physical when the situation calls for it.




Iron Man was a rare beast in the world of summer blockbusters -- a film that critics adored, and fans flocked to in droves. Attempting to repeat such a success is a task many filmmakers wouldn't wish on their worst enemy. Thankfully, in both films, Favreau had the good sense to surround himself with gifted artists whose passion matched their abilities. Despite being more traditional in structure and theme than the original, Iron Man 2 offers just about everything anyone could ask for in a superhero spectacular, and then some. It may not be as innovative as its predecessor, but it does manage to make up for that minor shortcoming by surpassing the original in every other respect.

Your body may be a temple, but your mind, memory experts say, is a palace, or should be, to master remembering. The Memory Palace is one of the notions that Joshua Foer explores in Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything, his entertaining and enlightening account of competing in the U.S. Memory Championships.

Narrated by Mike Chamberlain, who genuinely conveys the author’s nerdy and playful persona, Moonwalking began in 2005 when Foer, a 20-something fledging journalist living in his parents’ basement, covered the New York-based championships and met Ed Cooke, a memory Grand Master and delightfully eccentric brainiac. Cooke convinced Foer to become a contender in the contest, becoming his guru and guide over his year of training. In addition, Foer broadened his training by meeting with memory experts and athletes like Cooke’s European colleagues, who, Foer says, make their American counterparts seem like Jamaican bobsledders in the Olympics. While Chamberlain’s curiously random use of accents is a minor distraction, his interpretation of the group’s pub games — getting and memorizing women’s phone numbers and stealing kisses against the clock — is plenty funny.

Foer focuses first on the construction basics of The Memory Palace, a technique derived from the ancient Greek poet Simonides that takes advantage of the mind’s visual and spatial bent. A physical structure, a childhood home say, is selected from memory and filled, room by room, with the numbers, names, concepts, etc., to be memorized. One has to prepare the items previously, however, by charging them with the most vivid, better yet, erotic and bizarre personal associations possible. Using the PAO (Person Action Object) technique, one can also consolidate and compound the associations, thus producing a moonwalking Einstein, not to mention, Foer writes, the “indecent acts my own grandmother had to commit in the service of my remembering the eight of hearts”. It’s a nutty business inside and out, which Chamberlain as Foer conveys drily, none more so than when, working at his desk in anti-distraction earmuffs and goggles, he looks up to find his father staring at him.

While the narrative follows the calendar leading up to the competition, relevant digressions include looks at the clinical and other literature about mnemonists, plus visits with living examples. Tony Bouzon, a memory entrepreneur; ‘savants’ like 'Rainman' Kim Peek and 'pi' reciter Daniel Tammet; and memory researchers are interviewed, which raises issues and controversies related to autism, intelligence, and photographic memory. We also grasp more of the reality of those who suffer from remembering too much or too little. Foer additionally spends time exploring cultural questions of memory and memorizing; once considered a sign of nobility, what will be its fate in our infinite, digitally preserved age?

The idea of actually “moonwalking with Einstein” encapsulates wonder and delight at the boundaries of knowledge; so does Foer’s memorable book.

When China opened its doors to foreign biologists around 1980, they found a huge, beautiful country with a gloriously rich variety of plants and animals in habitats ranging from rainforest to cold uplands. To initiate field studies of species and work on behalf of their conservation with local colleagues was intriguing, exciting, and challenging, especially when, as was soon noted, Chinese and Western perceptions about nature sometimes differ. I participated in a giant panda study at that time, and now, years later, I still collaborate on wildlife projects in the country.
Yet the decades of political turmoil leading up to the 1980s had left China’s wildlife populations decimated, and large tracts of habitat degraded; the few protected areas were moribund, and ecological research had almost ceased. As if to make up for lost time, various government departments established many protected areas, raising the number from about a dozen in 1980 to over 2,000, or 15 percent of the country, today. A core of well-trained Chinese field biologists now conducts surveys and studies. New Chinese nongovernmental conservation organizations actively promote environmental issues. A Wildlife Protection Law was passed in 1988. For the first time ever, many Chinese have the funds and freedom to visit forests and mountains, to become aware of the pleasures offered by the country’s natural heritage, with its beauty admired and valued for itself and not modified to human tastes. I have found China’s changes in action and attitude toward conservation during the past quarter-century illuminating and remarkable, a lesson to the world about what can be accomplished within a few years.

Amazon.com: Your first reaction when you realized what was happening to your body was one you would expect: "Oh my gosh, I'm having a stroke!" Your second, though, was a little more surprising: "Wow, this is so cool!" What could be cool about a stroke?

Taylor: I grew up to study the brain because I have a brother who is only 18 months older than I am. He was very different in the way he perceived experiences and then chose to behave. As a result, I became fascinated with the human brain and how it creates our perception of reality. He was eventually diagnosed with the brain disorder schizophrenia, and I dedicated my career to the postmortem investigation of the human brain in an attempt to understand, at a biological level, what are the differences between my brain and my brother’s brain. On the morning of the stroke, I realized that my brain was no longer functioning like a "normal" brain and this insight into my brother's reality excited me. I was fascinated to intimately understand what it might be like on the inside for someone who would not be diagnosed as normal. Through the eyes of a curious scientist, this was an absolutely rare and fascinating experience for me to witness the breakdown of my own mind.

Amazon.com: What did you learn about the brain from your stroke and your recovery that your scientific training hadn't prepared you for?

Taylor: My scientific training did not teach me anything about the human spirit and the value of compassion. I had been trained as a scientist, not as a clinician. I can only hope that we are teaching our future physicians about compassion in medicine, and I know that some medical schools, including the Indiana University School of Medicine, have created a curriculum with this intention.

My training as a scientist, however, did provide me with a roadmap to how the body and brain work. And although I lost my left cognitive mind that thinks in language, I retained my right hemisphere that thinks in pictures. As a result, although I could not communicate with the external world, I had an intuitive understanding about what I needed to do in order to create an environment in which the cells in my brain could be happy and healthy enough that they could regain their function. In addition, because of my training, I had an innate trust in the ability of my brain to be able to recover itself and my mother and I respected the organ by listening to it. For example, when I was tired, I allowed my brain to sleep, and when I was fresh and capable of focusing my attention, we gave me age-appropriate toys and tools with which to work.

Amazon.com: Your stroke affected functions in your left brain, leaving you to what you call the "la-la land" of your right hemisphere. What was it like to live in your right brain, and then to rebuild your left?

Taylor: When the cells in my left brain became nonfunctional because they were swimming in a pool of blood, they lost their ability to inhibit the cells in my right hemisphere. In my right brain, I shifted into the consciousness of the present moment. I was in the right here, right now awareness, with no memories of my past and no perception of the future. The beauty of La-la land (my right hemisphere experience of the present moment) was that everything was an explosion of magnificent stimulation and I dwelled in a space of euphoria. This is great way to exist if you don't have to communicate with the external world or care whether or not you have the capacity to learn. I found that in order for me to be able to learn anything, however, I had to take information from the last moment and apply it to the present moment. When my left hemisphere was completely nonfunctional early on, it was impossible for me to learn, which was okay with me, but I am sure it was frustrating for those around me. A simple example of this was trying to put on my shoes and socks. I eventually became physically capable of putting my shoes and socks on, but I had no ability to understand why I would have to put my socks on before my shoes. To me they were simply independent actions that were not related and I did not have the cognitive ability to figure out the appropriate sequencing of the events. Over time, I regained the ability to weave moments back together to create an expanse of time, and with this ability came the ability to learn methodically again. Life in La-la land will always be just a thought away, but I am truly grateful for the ability to think with linearity once again.

Taylor: I learned that I have much more say about what goes on between my ears than I was ever taught and I believe that this is true for all of us. I used to understand that I had the ability to stop thinking about one thing by consciously choosing to preoccupy my mind with thinking about something else. But I had no idea that it only took 90 seconds for me to have an emotional circuit triggered, flush a physiological response through my body and then flush completely out of me. We can all learn that we can take full responsibility for what thoughts we are thinking and what emotional circuitry we are feeling. Knowing this and acting on this can lead us into feeling a wonderful sense of well-being and peacefulness.

Taylor: There is a long-term shortage of brain tissue donated for research into the severe mental illnesses. Most people don’t realize that when you sign the back of your license as an organ donor, the brain is not included. If you would like to donate your brain for research, you must contact a brain bank directly. There is also a shortage of "normal control" tissue for research. The bottom line reality is that if there were more tissue available for research, then more scientists would be dedicating their careers to the study of the severe mental illnesses and we would have more answers about what is going on with these disorders. The numbers of mentally ill individuals in our society are staggering. The most serious and disabling conditions affect about 6 percent--or one in 17--adults and 9-13 percent of children in the United States. Half of all lifetime conditions of mental illness start by age 14 years, and three-fourths by age 24 years.
